How to play

You get a country name and a blank canvas — no reference image. Draw the flag from memory, then hit Reveal & Score.

How the score works

An uneven tricolour still scores in the nineties. The right colours in the wrong order does not.

Stuck? Take a hint

Three structure hints per flag. Each one adds dashed guides — where the divisions fall, where an emblem sits, how the proportions work — and never a colour or a name. They do not change your score, but the result and the share card note how many you took.

How to draw the flag of Vietnam

The flag of Vietnam is one or more stars on a plain field in red and yellow, with five-pointed star. It flies at a ratio of 2:3.

The flag of Vietnam — ratio 2:3

Step by step

  1. Start with the right shape. Vietnam flies at 2:3 — for every 3 units of width the flag is 2 tall. Sketch that rectangle first; a flag drawn too square is the fastest way to lose layout points.
  2. Block in the background. Fill the whole flag with red first, then build the rest on top of it. Working from the largest area to the smallest keeps the proportions honest.
  3. Add the yellow. One or more stars on a plain field. Place these shapes by eye against the edges of the flag, not against each other.
  4. Finish with the five-pointed star. Detail is the last ten percent of the score, so leave it until the colour blocks are down. Size and position count for more than drawing every line of it.

What the flag means

A gold five-pointed star on red: the star’s points stand for the workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals and youth who make up the nation.

Common mistakes

  • Making the star too small. The yellow star is large and centred on a red field.
  • Watch out for China and Morocco — they are close enough to Vietnam that people draw the wrong one from memory.

A trick for remembering it

One big yellow star, dead centre.
