How to play

You get a country name and a blank canvas — no reference image. Draw the flag from memory, then hit Reveal & Score.

How the score works

An uneven tricolour still scores in the nineties. The right colours in the wrong order does not.

Stuck? Take a hint

Three structure hints per flag. Each one adds dashed guides — where the divisions fall, where an emblem sits, how the proportions work — and never a colour or a name. They do not change your score, but the result and the share card note how many you took.

How to draw the flag of Portugal

The flag of Portugal is two equal vertical bands — green and red from the hoist, with armillary sphere and shield. It flies at a ratio of 2:3.

The flag of Portugal — ratio 2:3

Step by step

  1. Start with the right shape. Portugal flies at 2:3 — for every 3 units of width the flag is 2 tall. Sketch that rectangle first; a flag drawn too square is the fastest way to lose layout points.
  2. Divide the width into two. Mark the halfway line before you fill anything in. Even bands matter more than neat edges — the scorer cares where the colour blocks sit.
  3. Band 1: green. Fill the first band from the hoist with green. Use the fill tool rather than shading — flat blocks score better than sketchy strokes.
  4. Band 2: red. Fill the second band from the hoist with red. Use the fill tool rather than shading — flat blocks score better than sketchy strokes.
  5. Finish with the armillary sphere and shield. Detail is the last ten percent of the score, so leave it until the colour blocks are down. Size and position count for more than drawing every line of it.

What the flag means

The armillary sphere recalls the age of discoveries; the shield carries five smaller shields for five Moorish kings.

Common mistakes

  • Splitting the field in half. The green band takes two fifths, red three fifths, and the emblem straddles the join.

A trick for remembering it

Green two, red three, sphere on the seam.
